Steve Balmer gets excited

Really excited. Steve, the CEO of Microsoft, spoke at the Technology Executive Breakfast here in Ottawa this morning.

Digital Lifestyle, Digital Workstyle.
Steve Balmer spoke about the future and the past. How did we get here?

He reminded the Ottawa technology community of the way the world was in 1995 and compared that to the world we live in today:

  • Windows 95
  • dialup modems
  • few big, poor quality cellphones
  • no digital music downloads
  • no VoIP

Very different world in 2005. Steve claimed that we will see more transformation in the period 2005 to 2015 than we did in 1995 to 2005.

Balmer talked about processors and Intel's plans for putting more transistors. He positioned that Moore's Law will likely runout in 10 years or so because of the issues in cooling so much surface area of the chipset.

Where Steve really got excited was when he began discussing market position. He is an intensely competitive person. Microsoft is #1 or #2 in a lot of markets, but he really gets uptight around their #3 position in search engines. Excited means loud, higher pitch and talks faster.
