The city of Philadelphia reaches agreement with Earthlink for municipal WiFi.
What’s interesting about this initiative is that so many cable companies, phone companies and ISPs made such a big stink with the state legislature, the FCC and every government or political power in between. The deal with Earthlink is to build and operate a 135-sq mile WiFi network. The city leases space on the top of light standards for 10 years. Earthlink will work with ‘Wireless Philadelphia’ to charge $9/mo wholesale fee to ISPs providing service. Users are charged <$20/mo for the service.
